The Universal Language of Music

Picture Language is MusicI have people come to me quite often and ask the question “what can I do to get better”.  We all want to be better musicians and reach brand new levels in our playing. Everybody wants that! The problem is that many musicians don’t really know the best way to approach improving musically.

They may ask a question like, “what should I work on and where do I start” etc.  This is a broad subject. There are many factors to consider when it comes to improving as a musician. I just want to share with you one thing that I believe will help you. The way you think about music when you are learning can make a big difference in the results that you get. Do I have your attention?

Consider this. Music is a language similar to English, Spanish or French. Say for example that you are learning to speak French for the first time in your life. One way to learn French better is to get an English to French dictionary. With an English to French dictionary you can look up words that you already know in English and learn how to say them in the new language.

In other words, you know what you want to say in your mind, but you just don’t know how to express it or say it in the new language. If you don’t know many words in the new language, then you will be very limited. It will be difficult to communicate effectively, even though in your mind you know exactly what you want to say. That could be a very frustrating situation. Wanting to speak in the new language and not knowing the words to express yourself. To overcome this problem you will have to learn the words in the new language that are necessary in order to communicate effectively. We all can understand that when it comes to learning a verbal language.

Likewise with music. Most musicians know how they want to sound in their mind. You can probably imagine yourself playing and sounding exactly how you want to when you play. The problem is many times we don’t know how to produce those sounds. We don’t know those chords, chord voicings or progressions to express ourselves musically the way that we would like to. This is the problem! It is just like not knowing the words that you need to communicate effectively. Music is a language that you have to learn how to communicate effectively.

Instead of letters, in music we have notes. Instead of words, in music we have chords. Instead of sentences, in music we have progressions. Similar to any other language you have to learn the things that will enable you to express yourself. That is why you have to keep learning new things musically.  Things that you don’t already know. It is important to find musical resources and people in which you admire their playing. If you have the opportunity to do so, learn what they are doing. This will help you to increase your musical vocabulary. You will be learning new things that will enable you to communicate effectively musically. You will be learning the language of music and how to express it.

The fact of the matter is, if you learn from other musicians, you will start to pick up their approach and style to playing. This can be a very effective way to learn if you have a good model to pattern yourself after. Find you a good musical mentor. Someone in which you can learn the language from. This can be different people over the course of time but you should have musical mentors you can pattern yourself after. This is one way to improve as a musician. Learn the language.
